Introduction ▄

What is FontEdit?
═════════════════
FontEdit is a program which lets you to modify the font used in DOS Text
mode with a VGA adapter. It provides a graphical interface in which you
can modify the standard DOS font. It is mouse driven, and cannot be run
without a mouse.
Files
═════
FontEdit should contain the following files:
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
FONTEDIT.EXE ─-Graphical font editing program
SETFONT.EXE ─-Program which sets DOS Text font; uses file created in
FONTEDIT.EXE
REVERSE.EXE ─-Program which creates a mirror image of a font. More
of a joke than anything else.
DF.BAT ─-Short batch file which calls MODE. This resets the
font to standard DOS Text.
ASCII.FNT ─-FontEdit font file: standard DOS Text.
SANSERIF.FNT ─-FontEdit font file: sanserif.
BY_HAND.FNT ─-FontEdit font file: hand-drawn looking font.
FONTEDIT.DOC ─-This file.

Getting Started ▄

Choosing a font file
════════════════════
There are two methods of choosing a font file: interactively, or from
the command line.
Command line:
To choose a font from the command line, simply enter its name:
FONTEDIT SANSERIF.FNT or FONTEDIT SANSERIF.
Notice that you don't have to type ".FNT". This is the default
extension. So long as you don't have a file of the same name without
any extension, the file with the .FNT extension will be loaded.
Interactive:
If you don't specify a file on the command line, or if the file you
specify is not found, you will be asked to enter a filename. Here,
as before, you don't have to type the .FNT extension. Also, you may
type <Enter> to load up ASCII.FNT, the default DOS Text font.
Mouse control
═════════════
Once in the font editor, you use the mouse to modify the font you loaded
up. The left mouse button adds to the box it is over, and the left
button erases it.
Option boxes ▄
▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀
Across the bottom of the screen, there are nine option boxes: A..Z,
a..z, Symbols, Numbers, Start Value, Save Font, Quit (Save), Quit
(Abandon), and Load New Font. These control the program.
A..Z
════
This displays the letters A through Z on the screen, if you haven't
changed them to something else. At any rate, it displays ASCII char-
acters 65-90.
▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄

a..z
════
This displays the letters a through z on the screen, ASCII 97-122.
Symbols
═══════
This displays most (27) of the punctuation symbols: !"#$%&'()*+,-./
(ASCII 33-47), :;<=>?@ (ASCII 58-64), and [\]^_ (ASCII 91-95). Note:
this misses one symbol: ` (ASCII 96). Since there is only room on the
screen for 27 characters at a time, ` didn't fit.
Numbers
═══════
This displays the numbers 0 through 9 (ASCII 48-57).
Start Value
═══════════
This lets you specify the ASCII code to start on. It then displays the
next 27 characters. (Up through 127 max.) By specifying 96 here, you
can modify the last punctuation symbol. You may also specify any number
between 0 and 127.
Save Font
═════════
This allows you to save the font without exiting the program. You may
either enter a name, or hit <Enter> to accept the current name. Note:
the program does NOT check to see if the file is already there. It
automatically overwrites existing files without asking beforehand.
Quit (Save)
═══════════
This exits the program, giving you the save prompt first.
Quit (Abandon)
══════════════
This exits the program, abandoning any changes made to the current font.
Load New Font
═════════════
This lets you load a new font and abandon the current one. If you want
to save the changes to the current font, you must select Save Font
BEFORE you select Load New Font. Load New Font simply brings up the
Load prompt.
SetFont ▄
▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀
Usage: SETFONT <filename>
This is the program that actually changes the font in DOS. You run it
in DOS with the name of the font you want to use on the command line:
SETFONT SANSERIF.FNT or SETFONT SANSERIF
As with FontEdit, .FNT is the default extension. Run DF.BAT to put the
DOS back to normal. Also, any time you go into graphics mode, the font
is reset. However, so long as you stay 25 line text mode, the font
stays set, even in application programs.
Reverse ▄
▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀
Usage: REVERSE <input file> [output file]
This is a program which creates a mirror image of a font. If [output
file] is not specified, it uses the input file's name, with a .BKW
extension.
